Babelfish reports it as something along the lines of

"electrical luminescence diode armband ordinator"

ie, an LED wristwatch!
LED watches are quiet and polite. No ticking, no tocking, no beeping, no buzzing; they will only tell you the time when you ask to see it and they will do so instantly with no attention-seeking animations. A more civilized watch for a more civilized age.

Sounds like a typically succinct German short word for something !

I drove to Germany to visit a good friend of mine a while back, and he came up with some other gems of the German language that were sort of onomatopoeias that work before translation. The two I can recall were something like ?tankenfillen? for getting petrol, and ?bangencrumpenwagon? for car accident. Or something sounding very similar, although bablefish doesn?t recognise either of these :D

And the german for an amazing LED watch ?? ?

onomatopoeias ???

Meaning please as its not in my Scrabble Dictionary. Also Micosoft Word accepts this as a valid word but does not give a definition. If this keeps up I'll have to go out and buy a real dictionary!!

Take it easy on us boys from Brooklyn!!!!!

If you don't mind adverts, try dictionary.com - if you do mind adverts, try en.wiktionary.org.

Thanks Dot - As an FYI, this is exactly just what my father used to do to me when I asked him how to spell a word. His answer "Look it up" (didn't matter to him when I said if I had the slighest idea of how to spell it I would't be asking him).

At least I have the spelling!!!

A word which is an "onomatopoeia" is a word that sounds like the thing it describes, eg 'B A N G' said nice and loud, or meow, or Plop etc.

I dont know everything about google, but one of the little gems is if you ask it for a definition, it will provide loads of them immediately. EG :-

open up google, and simply put " define:onomatopoeia " (not including the " " 's !!)

can anyone break it down (decode) for me

elektrolumineszenzdioden = electoluminescence diodes
armband = bracelet/wristband
ordinatoren = not really a German word, but the French word for computer is "ordinateur"
(car accident = Autounfall)

Reminds me of MY first ebay name, 23 letters long, veeery funny, but impossible to spell for the non-german. Changed it to something that should work in any language of the western hemisphere...

BTW: is there a way to change one's forum name? Mine is too long and I guess noone really gets it... (my name is not Kate and I have no canoe  )

Any proposal for a LED watch onomatopoeia? Perhaps "bling", or "zing", ...? Imagining a comic version of the first minutes of "Live and Let Die" might help

Onomatopoeias have to ?sound? like the action they describe, and I think I am right in saying that most of my LED watches don?t make any distinct sound when in action ! Sure, they glow nicely, and you can get mesmerised I suppose :)

As for your nickname ? I must admit, I always thought the phonetic pronunciation of your nickname implied you were maybe a Japanese citizen living in Germany !!

So, maybe we could come up with a new english nickname that is a funny and memorable sounding Germanic type word that wont insult brits yanks japs scots pinkos germans or anyone else, and will also be related vaguely to LED watches ? even though its an actual German sounding word and when translated means something completely odd (ps, I am a scot).

So, err, how about ?....... LEDerhosen !!!

(ok, ok, so I?ve had too much bier this evening  )

A bit about German

Post20 Jun 2006, 20:14

Hi all,

I will move back to Hamburg shortly in order to live up to my alias again.
One of the best German <==> English online dictionaries is probably this one:

dict.leo.org

Very convenient to use.

Some of my favourite German words are Flussschifffart, Untersuchungsausschuss, and Depp.

Yours

Ok, so this has to be an ono... of 2nd order  : the transcription of what sounds like the look of a flashing LED display.

Close! It's the Japanese equivalent of "TentinQuarantino" - a nick I always wanted to use, but only until he made Kill Bill 2... However, kateshitikano (from Takeshi Kitano) has been read as kate-shiti-kano (=kate shitty canoe) more than once - Tarantino's revenge?
Diginut wrote:?....... LEDerhosen !!!
Now that's a brilliant idea! 8) 8) How can I change my nick here  (thinking about it - LCDerhosen would suit me better...)?
BTW it's funny that Lederhosen are considered something typically German although in the almost 40 years I've been living here (southern Germany, but not Bavaria), I can't remember ever having seen anybody wearing a "Lederhose" on the street. Another lost tradition :(

Definitely not - you were still able to write
Which reminds me of a beer joke:
It has been proven that beer contains female hormones.
How?
When you drink too much of it, you talk rubbish and can't drive.
[Sorry if any female forum member (are there any?) feels insulted]

Famous: "Donaudampfschifffahrtsgesellschaft" <Danube steamship company>
...
(getting a bit OT here)

Noooooooooo. Keep Kate-shiti-kano. It's much much cooler than rewolf even if no-one understands it. (it's been bugging the hell out of me as to what it could mean but at least it stands out...)

glad you find it inspirational. why not go for it ??!!

I have a photo somewhere of me at a fancy dress party wearing Lederhosen that I'd hired from a shop. However, when I got home and wore them for more than 30 seconds I suddenly realised that they were about 10 sizes to small for me, and incredibly tight. In fact so tight that the big dangly bits that gurantee I am male almost shrivelled up and dropped off. Maybe they were hotpants instead ? ANyway, last damm time I wear that weird stuff !!! I felt like an extra out of Monty Python.
