when i removed the two nicads, i was left with two wires. one i marked + as it was solderd to the + tab. assuming that the other was -, when i hooked the lithium up i put + to +, - to -. does this bypass the solar panels?. also, while the display is very dim, it is too dim to see well even in a dark room. also not all of the digits are at the same intensity. some are faint, others virtually none seen. basket case? the lexan housing appears to have crystalized also. peter

Peter , Normally hooking to those two wires would not bypass the solar cell but if you see no display brightness intensity change occur in different lighting conditions then it would indicate a broken SC or wire leading to it. Like what sounds like may have occurred with the display.Maybe some segments or digits were bad before you openrd it as i believe you mentioned is possible.

If the watch was opened in a bruttle way or a knife accidently slips in two far when breaking the display area seal then damage or further damage to the display can occur. Also damage may have occurred during the years it was shifted here and there while no longer vacuum sealed for shock protection.

However you may very well have saved the inner circuitry from damage by opening years ago as some Silicone/mixxes used did not block all damage.

Sounds like it needs a new display as well as thouroughly rebuilt.
First thouroughly clean up all old goo every where and or corrosion with isopropyl and let dry.Sometimes dirty/oily gel will act like an added resistor and can cause dim seg/digits. Howard

p.s The lexan should be fine unless there was accidental chemical solvent damage done to it.
