Replace it with one of the SASM modules?

Try warming the module up Peter (under a lamp, or next to a heater).
If it springs to life, it’s probably the oscillator circuitry.
Unfortunately, it’ll probably stop working again once the temperature drops.
Some people can fix this. See here:

andrew, i did that this evening. dropped the module in the case and put it under a 100w incandescent at about 6" for about 15 minutes. hooked my 3v power pack to it and it lit right up. before it could cool down, i quickly installed new renata 357's and closed it up. lit right up so i set it. thinking back when i first was trying to get it going, i was trying to start it cold. after i got some life out of it i installed the cells and it sort of worked, but stopped intermittently. that was when i opened it and recleaned the cell ends and contacts and reclosed it. it lit right up, but i had been wearing it so it was warm. that was last march. when i opened it to adjust the trimmer and put in the renata's it had been sitting in a drawer so it was cold. apparently there is a problem getting the circuits and qc to fire up when it is cold. maybe that was the original problem all along. is this something common to the p2's? anyway it is now on my wrist again. thank you very much for the suggestion andrew. this site is awesome. i think we all should make sure ed never shuts it down. where would we be without all this international knowledge? :-D :-D peter

Will it continue to work?
I had a P4 module which worked when heat was applied and would continue working for around 12 hours before failing again. :-(
What does applying heat actually do? I imagined it causes the conductive traces to expand on the PCB thus correcting any interruption to the circuit?

ok, further report on this goofy module. it continued working for about 12 hrs. for 5 of those hours i had it on my wrist just after getting it going. at night i took it off and put it on the nightstand. checked it periodically during the night. worked fine. upon putting it on in the morning it died within 1/2 hr. i took it off and when it cooled down it began working again. this was an on again off again process during the day[yesterday]. when i got home i once again opened it, took out the 357's and put it back under the lamp. after about 15 minutes i hooked the powerpack to it and it lit right up. unhooked the powerpack and reinstalled the 357's. it lit right up. i set the time. this was now 25 hours ago. it is still working fine. i did not take it off last night, so it didn't cool down overnight. andrew had directed me to a post dealing with temp sensors. must be something wrong with these in my mod. i am going to continue wearing it a few days and then take it off and let it cool. will let you know what happens. maybe it has to run for awhile to settle in. it IS 37 years old. before i reopened it to change the trimmer it was working fine warm or cold. :?: :?: peter

yuuup, further fiddling with it worked. after the last go around with the power pack/then cells i just reset the time each time it stopped and started working again. after about 3 more goes at it it is now working fine. i think it was ed who said sometimes the old chips have to "relearn" what they are supposed to do. i am happy again. i don't believe i will reopen it tho' even to readjust the trimmer. i am going to let it run til the cells go out and by then maybe it has learned what to do. ;-) :-D :-D peter

addition to old thread. after 1 1/2 yrs on the renata 357's i thought it may be time for a cell change. i used maxell this time since i had no more renata's. i used them first because i had read that they have the most amH. maybe so since they lasted 1.5 years. on the meter they were now in the reject scale but they still lit the module. anyway, with trepidations, remembering the first challenge to get this thing going, i opened it up, changed the trimmer to speed it up, inserted the new cells, closed it up aaaaannnnnddd-----it lit up ~:( ~:( . maybe the 1+ years running trained it[?] to work as it should again. :-) . peter
