Sears Roebuck R5

Hi-
Just picked up a Sears R5 with the two battery set up. The watch had 675 batteries in it and the guy I took it to tried new ones and it did not work. I am hoping these are the wrong batteries and that is all . Does anyone know what size batteries would work in a R5 I have tried two 386 with no results. Any info would be appreciated.

Does the watch have battery hatches like this one.

If so the correct battery size would be 357. The 386's would be to loose in that case and not make the correct contact.

Put in the 357 and nothing. I recided to the fact that this would be a parts watch for sell on EBay. Then after a while a little life appeared when I pressed the set button. Could this mean the contacts need to be cleaned and if so how is it done?

Here are some pics. I have read about the vinegar bath and wondered if that might be an option. Worse case could a new module be found?

The battery contacts can be cleaned using a fibreglass pen, same as this one on eBay, definitely worth a try.

The vinegar bath is a debatable subject, it can work but it can also destroy good modules, I don't think it would be advisable to try it at this stage.

When it lit up did it display complete digits or just partial digits? This information would give a pointer to the techies.

Replacement original modules are available and Ed the site administrator (retroleds) can supply them to you. He could also attempt a repair on your original module for you.

Try using some electrical contact cleaner on the battery pads or a fibreglass pen is also very good. For some reason over time the battery contacts on Hughes modules become non-conductive and once cleaned work properly, don't forget to clean-up the little brass contact on the inside of the battery well and make sure it's making good contact with the side of the battery.

Hopefully it'll work again, nice watch...

When I had the batteries in I would press in the set button and get at first one digit then another. At one point pressing the set button had all the digits staying on and the hour digit advancing. I could press the top button at this point and the hour digit would stop and the minute digit would start to advance. Let me say at this point it only comes alive if I press in the set button. Pressing the other two will not get a response unless the set button has been pushed first.

The module looks as clean as a whistle which is a good sign, although not a guarantee, also it shows signs of life which is a good sign, could be the contacts for the command buttons are dirty try cleaning the contacts on the side of the module and check to make sure the module is aligned correctly in the case and the command button is making contact with the module when it is pressed in. Also check that the set button is not stuck in and making unwanted contact with the module, ensure the rubber band is in place inside the case before refitting the module.

Tried the cleaning and now nothing. How much would a replacement module run? I kind of like this old watch even though the wife doesn't. I would like to restore it and get it going again the case and red crystal are perfect.
