DKNY LCD - Model NY1148

Post27 Apr 2011, 19:48

It's been a while since I bought a watch, and it's been years since I've bought a non-vintage watch. I saw this DKNY branded negative LCD in the thrift shop while browsing for books and decided "what the hell". :-D

Image

That scratch is probably the reason why it was given up in the first place. It's not as bad as it looks in the pic.... but it still could use a polishing.

Image

Chunky and heavy with a good clasp but the weight is well distributed. It's surprisingly comfortable.

Image

Look-alike of a classic case design.

Image

Much bigger than one of my daily wearers - an 80's Timex. And LESS features! Just the time and a light. DUMB!

Image

To paraphrase another member's post "When fat was in." LOL!
I realize it's no 'future classic' - but thought I'd share it anyway. ;-)

Nice watch, how much did you pay for it if I may ask.
I prefer it to the "EPD one thats costs £1000" and is in another thread by Seiko.
I wont shout about it too loud because i think the thread starter has part-ex his wife for one and any slight negative comments left receive a lawyers defence.

Model NY1148
Very nice watch - I have the very same one 8-)
24h selectable
date format dd-mm or mm-dd selectable
backlight, no alarm, no stopwatch.
Bought new in October 2004, rarely ever worn since then, recently inserted a new battery.

If you're interested PM me, maybe I'd sell it. With original box and papers.

Hi cheeksterr,
seeing that I bought it a thrift store a.k.a. "a second-hand store" it was quite affordable... $24.00. :-D True, it could have been less but it seems everyone is raising their prices today -even the thrift stores. :-?

I must say Rewolf, that you have good taste in watches. lol
Seriously, thanks for listing the detailed info re: the watch features. I was too occupied with uploading the pics to list them. I still think they could have put included a date feature but it is what it is. What color is the backlight on yours? Mine is blue but I think there are green varieties out there.

Funny, I'm sure mine has a date feature (will check when I get home tonight). My backlight is green.
Maybe I can find the time to post some module pics tomorrow.

Rewolf, yours has a date feature? I guess you got the AMG package. :-P
The digits on mine are have a faint green tint to them but the light is blue. I would have preferred green all the way. Hmm... maybe I could swap blue LED bulb with a green one? I'm guessing it's an LED bulb, I haven't opened it up yet.

Yes - Pics would be nice.

Ok, some corrections to my previous posts:

1. I hadn't replaced the battery recently, but had put the watch on the "battery empty"-pile....
2. I replaced the battery (V391, had lasted 2 years) last night and made lots of photos - including module deep inside. Will have to sort them and then post some of them here.
3. It DOES have date, but not selectable, only DD-MM fomat - which I strongly prefer.
4. It also shows DOW (English), automatically set by date.
5. The backlight is blue, not green, and it's definitely EL, not LED.

The case is of very good quality, all stainless steel (no base metal), and the band is about the stiffest I ever encountered, I had difficulties re-inserting the spring bar because the band wouldn't bend more than 1mm...

Hmmm.. I looks like I need to fiddle around more with my watch to get the date to display. Perhaps pressing one of the buttons 2x in quick succession? I don't have the watch with me so I'll have to try it out later. I look forward to your pics.

I have Huertecilla - and they are quite impressive! They are very nice watches but the reported problems with the scroll function is a turn off for me.

At that price level one should expect things to simply work yes. One pays extra for that.

From a manufacturers point of view I understand the pressures for release as investment cost do pile up with bankers howling at the door for return on it, but it is never justified.

It happened with many of the ealiest solid state electronic digitals too.
The P1 had a 100% fail rate  One can even make a case that it was thus nót the first digital watch at all but a premature release of a pre-production stage.
Pulsar solved it by upgrading to the later module making thát the réal first release date and so not thé first...
That would make it complicated though since the next ´first´ had a high return rate too albeit lower.
The first with a sort of acceptable return rate was third (or fouth) on the scene.
Anyway, both impressive and amazing how Pulsar maintained the high level image. Justly so but imagine it today ~:(

The MODE button switches between date only, date/time alternating, time only. No tricks required.

Thank you Rewolf.... normally I have to reset my watches when I buy them from ebay - they almost always come from a different time zone.
This purchase was from a store down the street from my office so the time was accurate - even to the minute - so I didn't immediately adjust the time.
That is a pretty long excuse, I know  . The short answer is "I was too lazy."

Just to prevent misunderstandings:
I don't want to turn this thread into a sales-promotion for my DKNY NY1148. I'm not eager to sell it - but if it makes someone happy I'll let it go. I've had it for over 6 years now and except for battery replacement didn't touch it in the last 4 years.

I feel this is an underrated watch. Build quality of case, bracelet and module is very good. It's definitely worth the US $90 I paid for it new.
It would be nice if this thread became sort of a "reference" thread for people searching information about this watch.
To aid this: LEDluvr, could you maybe add "NY1148" to the title of your starting post? Would help with google and the forum search (in case anyone ever uses it ;-) ).
