ID help & missing part (capacitor/resistor?) on module

Post06 Jun 2011, 19:23

Hi all,

I've bought this LED watch at a flea market yesterday for 5€. It's my first LED clock ... Sadly this thing is not working.

I am sure that there is a SMD component missing next to the crystal, but I am not sure if it's a resistor or a capacitor. I've tried several capacitors (10pF, 22pF) and reistors (1M, 100k, 10k, 1k, 100) but this did not help. I hope that I did not kill rest of the module ...

Can anyone help me? Would be really, really great if I could revive this baby ...

Thanks a lot
Sebastian

Sebastian:
Welcome to DWF.nu!

You know, there isn't much that most people can repair on the front side of that module(made by Fairchild). And you realize there are microscope wire(wire-bonds) running to each segment of display, etc. Probalby biggest danger to that module right now is that it is uncovered on front. The quartz oscillator crystal is obviously still the orginal. BUt what is the watch issue, or total non-functional?

The quartz oscillator itself is common.

Hi!

Thanks for your nice welcome! :-)

Don't worry, the microscopic wires are OK and are protected with a plastic cover which I've removed for the photo.

The module is totally non-functional, dead, ... Obviously there is a component missing next to the oscillator (you can in fact see the soldering points), ...
