Have a look here at the manual.
http://www.digital-watch.com/DWL/1work/seiko-0439-5009/

i think it has a spring on the upper and under side of the caseback that you have to push in with a small screwdriver to open the case.
But i'm not 100% sure...so if you see no little gap to put your screwdriver in to push the spring, it maybe is done different.

here you can see the spring if you look carefully

Hi David,
The A031's caseback has two layers; the top is secured by the battery hatch, when you screw the hatch off the outer shell comes loose. Then you can remove the case back/crystal combination by carefully pressing the spring through the gap and lifting it out. One removed you can lift off the crystal/bezel combination and you are at the movement.
Then pull out the stem/crown one click and carefully press the stem-removal part that appears on the side of the movement when the stem is pulled in first click position. When pushing this small plate you can pull out the stem completely.
Once the stem is removed you can lift the movement from its shell/caseback.
Goodluck!

Don't know why people are telling you how to remove the back on an A031 when the title says 0439-5009! Anyway, presuming you mean the entire back not just the battery cover, these simply pop off (quite a lot of force needed and you will need a caseback press to refit it) if you insert a knifeblade into the very tiny recessed slot on the back and twist. Curiously the 0439 was one of those Seikos that came in two completely different looking case style- 5009 has the two front buttons while 4007/8/9 have four buttons on the side (the side button watch's back simply unscrews for a battery change).

Why do you want to take the back off? Not a lot you can do with an 0439 as the actual module is integrated into the LCD display and pretty much tamperproof. You can clean the contact cones in the carrier plate (they sometimes give problems) and clean the battery clip but that's about it.
