Post18 Nov 2013, 19:40

Hi friends...here two NOS watches for sale but with defects:

Seiko A547-5050 sports 100 with tag: the watch works but alarm not...i clean the circuit but nothing...the case is in perfect condition with back sticker.Ideal for a new circuit....

Citizen digiana 30-0055 with tag: the watch works well but there's a spot in the panel so if you have one in good condition you'lll have a great watch...this one comes with original box

Nice watches, but a textbook example of why "NOS" should be abandoned as a description of condition (clearly, "NOS" and "mint" condition ARE two different things).

Yes,it's still available...the lcd panel started bleeding more than in pic...so this needs to be replaced with a good used or a NOS one.

Simone,
NOS can be a watch that is never sold but still could have all kinds of defects or scratches.
If a watchmaker leaves it in a drawer and moves it around over the years, it surely could get damaged.
Mint condition is flawless imho.

You stated that the watches were purchased unused from an old watch store so surely the description NOS is actually accurate in this case?

I wouldn't worry too much, the photographs show the watches that are on offer, you give an accurate description of each piece, any interested parties are free to ask further questions and we are all wise enough to be able to judge what is on offer based on the photographs that you uploaded!

Guys, for the I-don't-know-how-many-eth time, NOS is NOT a description of condition; it's a description of the watches' history! It means...purchased from the factory for resale, never sold, and put into storage (I think "dead stock" is the UK term). There is absolutely nothing there that even suggests the watch is still in any particular condition. "Mint", on the other hand, carries an implicit and specific meaning...new, flawless, as it was when it left the factory (how many are willing to argue with me about THAT?..if so, I would hand you over to the coin collectors, who, after all, invented the term). How these two terms came to be synonymous is a complete mystery to me, but I think some effort needs to be made to keep them separate (different words mean different things, and here's a textbook example of how important those distinctions can be). I've seen watches at NAWCC shows that were called "NOS" by the seller, which, having been poorly stored, were in awful cosmetic condition! The sixty solid gold Pulsars I got from New York were all NOS in the truest sense (never worn, stored as unsold stock), but, due to handling and moving around without their boxes to protect them, only a handful (six, seven, maybe, depending on how fussy you wanted to be) were still in what I would call "mint" condition. I'm not suggesting for a second that there was any attempt to fool or deceive anybody here (there are pictures, after all!); it's just the wrong term to use to convey condition (and the pics do a better job of that than any verbal description, anyway).

Where did he say they were NOS condition? He just stated what they were :-? and FLOL at you once again dropping in that you bought all those solid gold watches, I'm amazed that you didn't mention owning 10 P1's!

How about in the first sentence of the original post? How about the TITLE OF THE THREAD? As for the rest, if that bothers you for some reason (and it clearly does, big time), it's something you should deal with on your own, in private (it does, however, say a lot more about you than it does about me). I was just trying to make a legitimate point...

i think that many new collectors don't know the difference between NOS and Mint. And i must admit..i made the same mistakes before.

Does anyone have a list of these terms? Maybe i can put them up with a sticky.

I agree NOS is not an accurate way to describe the condition of a watch.

However a watch that has sat unused in a box for several years can become defective, so both the title and the opening sentence are OK as far as I am concerned, describing firstly the history (NOS) and secondly the condition (with defects) I suppose it depends on how you read it! Obviously if someone finds the use (or misuse) of the acronym NOS particularly annoying they might be more inclined to read it differently to those who are not so concerned about it. ;-)

It doesn't say NOS condition though does it? He doesn't describe the condition as NOS he simply states what they are, and then also describes the condition.

I think the point has been made on both sides regarding the NOS debate and it is now time to move on....the topic has now been locked, if any parties wish to continue debating the issue please feel free to do so in private..... or politely in a new thread. ;-)

Because Simone still has one watch for sale I have moved the sales part of the thread here: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=6937&p=44485#p44485
