Eberhard lcd for man

Post08 Jan 2014, 23:27

Hi friends!
Here for you a new find...the only one lcd watch made by Eberhard for man in NOS condition.
The watch was abandoned in store for years with the batteries inside...so i've found a lot of corrosion on the module that I removed with the classic vinegar bath :-D
The design of this watch is very similar (probably the same and this is very curious) to the early Microma and Nepro watches built in 1975 and in fact Eberhard's module was made in August 1976 (8 76 was stamped inside).
The module is also very similar to the classic Nepro and Bulova (two batteries) but this one present "BBC" stamped on the lcd panel (maybe Brown Boveri Company??) with basic features: light, date and seconds...Very confortable on my small wrist even if the case is big :mega:
Unfortunatly the light isn't working.... :-?

THis watch was made with blue and white dial.... ;-)

Hello Simone,

BBC is indeed Brown, Boveri & Cie., but the module was made by MSA. BBC only provided the display panel, the rest of the module was engineered by MSA. As you know, Bulova (and others) also used this module, albeit produced in Hong Kong. Unfortunately it's not clear whether it was designed by MSA first and later on produced in Hong Kong, or whether it was the result of a Swiss/Hong Kong Joint-Venture from the start.
Based on the date codes of the movements I own, until recently I thought it was first made by MSA and later on produced in Hong Kong, but some weeks ago I got some modules which contradict this hypothesis -- firstly a Bulova branded, "Made in Hong Kong" Module from 1975 and secondly a 1977 MSA branded module with a BBC panel (as opposed to the nameless panels on the Hong Kong Modules).

Great info Martin :-D
It's so strange that light doesn't work, the circuit is very clean and i can't see any damage...there's two cell inside and i thinked that one is dedicated only to the bulb but if i removed it the lcd panel turn off...there's any tips about battery position (+ and -)?

Both batteries go in the same way, (-) down, (+) up. I've had quite some modules with blown bulbs. I guess that's the drawback of having a bright light. It works very well as long as it works, but after a while the filament burns out.

I have to double check because it's new....so i suppose the filament should be good...

My light works, but I had to make sure the contacts of the module and the buttons of the case were spotless super clean...

Hi Simone,
Another great catch you have there. I like those big blocks of stainless steel, and the 'dial' structure in this watch in particular.
If you have the opportunity to observe the lightbulb under a (stereo)microscope, you might give that a try too. If the bulb and contacts are clean the bulb is usually OK, but maybe it is defective as the watch was left in stock (probably not for no reason)
