Postage?

Post09 Feb 2016, 12:35

I recently sold some items and it seems one has got lost on it's way to Spain, I posted via the Royal Mail (tracked and signed) but was informed at the time of postage that the insurance doesn't cover jewellery - which I assume will include watches, I didn't know this until I got to the Post Office with the packages by which time I considered it too late to change anything so I sent it as it was with only the standard £50 insurance - which does not cover the value of the watch.

I have a lot more items that I would like to move on and was wondering if anyone could recommend a better service, ideally I would like to post with insurance and tracking and for a reasonable cost - Any ideas?

I used to use Tracked and signed for to Europe. But too many packages where going missing. Especially to Germany. It seems this service uses GLS at the other end who are utterly useless. If no one is home to sign for the package they wont leave a card, and just throw it back in the van and leave it at the Depot for you to chase it.

International tracked is slightly more money which is strange as it does no have the signature option, but it has never failed me.

Unfortunately you will have to fill out the Royal Mail lost form which is a pain. But if you have your return address on the back it will arrive home in a few months time ~:(

Yes I always insure to what the maximum is it to each country. Never usually enough to cover the goods. The only other way is parcel force but the prices are ridiculous. The tracked service has never let me down. It used to be Airsure before. Hope you get it back or it surfaces.

Are you sure they don't cover watches Mick. I cant find anything on the website confirming whether they do or don't. Up until now I had used tracked and signed and not lost anything. I have had a couple of rogues disappear but they always seemed to come back.

The only line I could find was this

"If you're sending valuables, money or jewellery overseas, we recommend that you use one of our International Tracking and Signature services"

It´s a general problem that jewellry isn´t covered by any insurance. It also does not make sense to increase the insured value as in case of a loss, the shipping company tries to pay by weight. The insured value isn´t even recorded in some cases, but the weight and size class only. Yes, there are special (expensive) services where you can insure a certain value, but these Services don´t cover watches either.

There are some good news however: Within 15 years I never lost any watch or package and I get and send watches on a daily basis. There was just one exception in early january this year, but the customer tried more or less everything to get rid of his watch (wrong adress, no tracking, no return adress).

Lloyd is right with services from Royal Mail to Deutsche Post or GLS in Germany. While you can trust Royal Mail or DeutschePost/DHL, sometimes Royal Mail packages are delivered through GLS and they do not always leave a notification. If I have a tracking I can call them and pick up the package - no Problem at all! I have the feeling that it becomes better and better with notifications, but the main problem persists: You do not know which company delivers.

It was what the lady in the Post Office said, I didn't check it out any further, hopefully I can claim and recoup some of the money.
