NOS Pulsar LED ladies watches & NOS Pulsar LCD mens watc

Post03 Dec 2006, 17:16

I have a limited supply of these watches for sale. Ladies Pulsar models 2926-2 and 2927-2 are $100 each with original instruction book and Pulsar gift box included plus shipping. Mens Pulsar models 3140-2 and 5140-2 are $100 for SS and $125 for GF they also include original instruction book and Pulsar gift box plus shipping. Anyone interested please contact me at gsratman1@netzero.net . These were the last models produced by Pulsar in Lancaster PA before they went out of business.My Dad was the production manager for them in the late 70's and early 80's. When I run out of these you will never be able to get any more. They would make great Christmas presents. Thanks, Greg Ratcliff If anybody needs pics contact me at the above email address and I can send them to you.

I bought a the GF Pulsar LCD 5140 from Greg, and let me tell you it keeps the most accurate time I have ever seen on a Digital watch..... I set the watch 2 months ago based on the atomic clock, and it has gained only 3 seconds..... Thats about 1 1/2 sec per month.... Nice job Pulsar Time Computer.... As much as I like this LCD I will always prefer the Pulsar LEDs over it............... They are just more cool!!!!!!! But this is still a pretty awesome watch to have......

these pulsar 3140 and 5140-2 lcds are the dark horse of the whole pulsar range.
they are sure to become one of the most collectable of the range.look at the facts...only lcd ever produced,last watches made by pulsar pa,made only for a limited period(approx 6 mths)and worn and favoured by the top pulsar designer.
these are set to rise in value to rival the companies led models...just watch!

Could you post a picture or two of these Pulsar LCD's?

What do you mean 'only LCD ever produced'? I don't think so!!!

redled: I think holly35 meant the only Pulsar LCDs produced before Pulsar was bought by Seiko....

This is 5140 - These are new photos,originals on this post were murky.

Thanks for the pics retroleds. I thought it probably meant something like that, but i'm a big fan of clarification.

You know, there's just something about LCD's; it seems it's very easy to make them look, well, ugly. Put another way, it's difficult to make them look good. Maybe i'm too picky, but to me a design has to have something 'magic' about it to appeal to me; some sort of subtle balance. It's hard to define. An intelligence, a harmony, that just looks 'right'.

This watch strikes me as ugly, because it looks unimaginative. A 5 year old could have designed this watch. There's no intelligence, no harmony, no message. Just my opinion.

yes
well beauty is in the eye of the beholder.the pics dont do the watch any favours.its stunningly elegant and simple .you need to examine it in the flesh so to speak.
my collection comprises initialy of led watches but there are a few early lcds that are simply beautiful time pieces.(only some early ,pre 1980s models;they were spoiled after this time with horrible multi displays showing a range of information re; seiko lcds)although s/s is more favoured today,( although the pulsar p2 and classic models are beautiful in the g/f versions) the pulsar 5140-2 .
g/f version i think is going to be the better bet with its lovley gold back ground display. i wonder if there are less of these made as apposed to the s/s 3140-2 lcd which being cheaper would have made it more competativly priced

Fresh pictures were taken - please scroll back to that post and click pictures for full size.
redled: You have to consider that watch first, in context of the times. Most of the other LCDs were like flat versions of LEDs - this watch with it's two stepped case and the elevated crystal was fairly groundbreaking. It also has a soft brushed finish to it, and the very gold display which contrasts the black digits nicely. It was very thoughtfully made to fit into the rest of the Pulsar line, without looking like a modified LED. It has great symetry, classic lines and a luxurious feel. It was the last produced effort of the highly esteemed watch designer Jean Wuischpard.

It may have been carefully designed, but to me it looks boring and unimaginative.

This reminds me of the specially commissioned Grima Pulsars. To me they look like pretentious garbage. I wouldn't wear one for fear of puking each time I check the time. Different for the sake of being different, with no rhyme or reason to their bizzare appearance. The exact opposite of what they should be, of what a good designer is supposed to do.

I don't care how prestigious or reknowned a designer or a brand is, It's best not to take such things into consideration when judging a watch. Ultimately a design must stand on it's own. It's either beautiful or it's not, it's good by itself or it's not good at all. who designed it or what brand it is is meaningless in itself.

I totally agree with you on the Pulsar LCD, boring and fugly, but I don't know how you can say that about the Grima's :shock: there's one or two I'm not that keen on, but some of them are awesome designs, I particularly like (from the left) the 2nd, 4th, and 5th, I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder :D

Unless you are interested in history, the design process, the marketing process and the people involved in all the aforementioned. Myself, I don't personally wear a watch very often, despite owning upwards of 750(from Pulsars to "Pez" watches)....I like fixing them for others(despite the sometimes "questionable" designs), I am intrigued by the different internal mechanisms, I enjoy the challenge of making them come to life and learning about the historical aspects of horology. It's one of those "different strokes for different folks" things - one man's fugly is another man's "cool & eccentric". 8) I think the Synchronar is a bit ugly, but I also think it is one of the coolest watches going, from it's design features to it's inventor(I loved seeing a picture of Roger Riehl,Sr. in a newspaper clip of him in high school, winning the science fair for an electronic scoreboard he designed). To me a working Synchronar is like having the History Channel on my wrist - but hey, not everyone gets sentimental about those kinds of things.

Well, ok, they don't all make me want to puke. I kind of like the rectangular pocket watches with seperate hours and minutes displays, and the square gold nugget is acceptable, and the third from the right would be ok if it lost that moronic band. Remember, just my opinion....

Don't get me wrong, I love the history of technology, particularly watches, and a piece can have historical or technological value apart from its design, as many do. But they are two different things, and should not be confused.

My point was: fugly can be acceptable if you feel the piece has other redeeming qualities. A Ford Model T is fugly(IMO), but I'd still like to have one.

a)figured I'd consolidate everything around my web prescence for consistancy;
b)figured I'd distance myself from that "name" and any connotations/assumptions people may make from it;
c)the dog got neutured the day after New Years("marking" on a pile of packing boxes was the last straw)...figured if he lost use of his "little1up" I could too. 8)

Ed, Congrats on taking over DWF. Those are some nice pics of the 5140-2 . How did you take them? I always either get the camera reflection on the face or it looks blurry. Thanks for the kind words from all on the beauty and simplicity of Jean Wuispards design. I only ever met him twice when his son Pete had a jewelry shop in Lititz, PA. They did all the solid gold repairs for us when ran Pulsar Repair Service in the early 80's. He was a really nice man, always ready to answer any questions I had on the gold soldering they did. When they were done you couldn't tell which side of the bracelet they repaired!!

Pulsar LCD's

Post03 Feb 2007, 06:20

Thanks Greg. You know, I was showing my wife the gold Pulsar LCD and she was immediately drawn to the rich gold background and the razor sharp crispness of the digits - something you just don't see these days. I gave her the Stainless Square faced Pulsar LED for an early Valentine's Day present....

I take my shots in a dark room, side light thru a photographers tent(cloth), no flash. I don't doctor my shots, ala Photoshop....a shot of a watch with no background just looks fake to me.

After talking to Bruce Wegmann on the phone today I decided to add my phone # for anyone interested in the watches. He told me I'm missing out on some sales as some people just want to be able to talk to who they are dealing with. Thanks for the advice Bruce and that was a great conversation we had. Here is my phone# 717-285-3048. Try to call later in the afternoon as I work til 4 PM eastern time, or leave a message and I will get back to you. Thanks, Greg Ratcliff
