hi, i have tried to put an ew battery in one of these and it's still dead, does it need a reset and if so how ? thanks

not good by the looks of it, have just turned the lights out and the light on the watch is functioning, the display however is not......

Doesn't look good...

Sorry if this is painfully obvious...
General rule of thumb for all brands - if a watch has a round, battery-sized, battery hatch, there is no reset function performed via the rear of the movement. You can always try poking any depressed setting button and then pressing the various command buttons, as some small percentage of watches had power saving features that allowed them to be shipped with batteries installed but not running. The light button's function is separate from any movement function, so it is not an indicator of anything other than you have a live battery installed. :-|
